These taxis are not so innocent on the wallet…

When visiting New York City, it’s easy to get caught in the city’s various tourist traps – poor-quality places or activities that cost way too much for their value. Follow my guide to making smart decisions and avoiding some of the city’s pitfalls to enjoy a fun and affordable trip to New York City.

1. Don’t take a cab.

Only grab a taxi if you are running late and there are severe consequences. I took a cab once because I had to catch the last bus to my town at the end of nowhere in Long Island. Worst mistake ever! I was charged $20 — equivalent to a week’s worth of subway rides! I didn’t realize I got robbed until I reflected on the incident. The driver started a conversation with me and then apologized for not making a turn…and you know the rest.

2. Don’t eat at an overrated place.

It is difficult to specify which restaurants are overrated but if you see a crowd, it’s most likely overrated which is everywhere in New York City. I can’t emphasize how much I regret buying a slice of pizza from this one place… Hint: it starts with an “S” and rhymes with “borrow.” I initially thought, “It’s a franchise, the price shouldn’t be ridiculous.” Well, I was dead wrong. I told my friend what happened and he introduced a dollar a slice pizza. What! He also promised to take me to a pizza tour that he booked through this web app called Vimbly. I am starting to count down already!

3. Don’t do what all tourists do.

I attended college close to the city. Every time I walked out of the World Trade Center PATH station, I bumped into tourists taking pictures of oxygen…or the twin towers that unfortunately no longer exist. When I was still in school, my international friends were shocked when they found out I haven’t seen a Broadway show, been up the Empire State Building, or tried ice skate at the Rockefeller Center. Maybe when I win the lotto, I’ll consider it.

4. Don’t buy anything from a deli near a subway station.

Worst mistake number two! I thought street carts were rip offs until I bought a can of Red Bull from one of those delis around the corner. I wonder how the cashier didn’t turn red when she said, “Three dollars.” The expectation for everything to be overpriced in New York City is just an excuse for you not to look around for a more affordable place. Remember, you have the choice to not support these overpriced places– you won’t go hungry! There a bazillion places to eat in New York City!

Stay away from crowded stores in NYC – especially on weekends…

5. Don’t shop on a weekend.

Shopping on a weekend is such a nightmare. First, you have to wait in line to use the fitting room. Then when you finally decide to make a purchase, you have to wait in line to pay. Is it really worth it? I love to shop and I am not suggesting not do it, but there are cheaper ways to have fun…such as taking a tango class. And what makes me grind my teeth is that there is always that inconsiderate person in front of you harassing the poor sales associate for an exchange or return. Besides, a $39.99 blazer on sale for $30 is not really on sale. Time is money too!

I agree with the not shopping on a weekend! Firstly, I’m a dude – already I do NOT enjoy shopping, but when the MRS drags me with her, I do NOT wanna be waiting a bazillion years for her to try something on. And trust me guys, just telling them they’d look fantastic won’t cut it! Secondly, there are the eating places, they’re usually over-packed due to all those shoppers taking a break from round 2! Run while you still can!

I’ve visited NYC many times and been caught by the overpriced eateries and food stands in the street! Watch yourselves! Unless you’re careful, you’ll become a blind to the value of what you’re doing tourist who’ll part with over 7 bux for a sandwich! Learn from this post and my own stupid experience, don’t be a sucker!
