Whenever I hear the words desserts, pastries, and booze in the same sentence, I get excited. Very excited. For a sweet and unique happy hour, head down to Oro Bakery and Bar on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Oro Bakery and Bar is not your ordinary coffee shop. Located on Broome Street, on the edge of the LES bordering Chinatown/Little Italy, this unassuming and welcoming spot came into view last summer, on a hot July day. I had been searching for an afternoon drink to take the edge off, and cool down after walking. I stumbled right in and fell in love immediately.

Recently I was invited to Oro Bakery and Bar’s 5-year anniversary (that long already?). That night, the restaurant was rolling out their food/dinner menu for the first time. I was so excited to be there! I had such a good time…

On that cold December night, there was no other way to start the night than with a glass of a smooth pinot noir, with hints of spiciness and tantalizing flavors. It was delicious and went

Oro Bakery and Bar offers a wide selection of different wines, bottle and draft beers, and different sakes. Anything you are in the mood for, it’s probably there.

For my dinner, I ordered the pork confit with corn souffle. My cute and charming waitress took my order, and in what seemed like no time, it had arrived. I dug right in – all I have to say is…. wow! It was deliciously warm, completely flavorful: a total comfort food. (then again, it could just be my Southern roots coming to the surface…)

Soon, it was time for dessert. There were a few options, including a variety of ice cream and sorbets, but I settled for something much more flavorful and filling – Oro’s house-made carrot cake. I absolutely love icing, especially when it is fresh and made in-house. It was delicious with every bite.

As that particular evening was the restaurant’s anniversary, it was very crowded and loud inside the place. But do not be confused – that’s not usually the case. Normally, Oro Bakery and Bar is a perfectly cozy place to read or work, with your cup o’ joe, or join some friends for an intimate evening in a low-key setting.

Overall, Oro Bakery and Bar is definitely a hot spot for a chill night. Highly recommended.
