Do you know where royal couples meet? It’s an interesting thought and a question on my mind since the Royal Wedding back in April 2011. Our newly married royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton were made the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by their Grandmother the lovely Queen Elizabeth, the woman who seems to be featured on more coins across the world than I could imagine.
Interestingly Prince William didn’t attend Cambridge University – he graduated from St Andrews University in Scotland unlike his father, the future King, Prince Charles. He and Prince Harry both chose to study in Scotland rather than England. I made a couple of assumptions about the area surrounding St Andrews, it seems like a really special place – after all it brought two princes from the depths of England. Was it the education? Was it the beauty? I’m still not certain but one thing is for sure: Will must have been glad he chose to study here, this is the place he met his wife, Kate Middleton.
The royal connection has made St Andrews a top spot in the destination guides, tourists from all parts make a special detour an hour or so out of Edinburgh to soak up the atmosphere generated by this close royal connection. If you’re heading up to Edinburgh or Scotland in general and have a spare day, pop charming St Andrews in your itinerary for an idyllic day out – fit for a prince.
Looking around the St Andrews area, you get a real feel for the place and I can see why they did choose this place over the endless opportunities they both had. It’s worth planning the time of year you head towards St Andrews, during term time it can seem like a hive with people nipping back and forth. I would much rather visit during the holidays, Easter is a perfect opportunity to visit.
It might be a nice idea to visit over a transition stage where, for the first couple of days you have the town to yourself – then towards the end when you have explored, the students return and you can experience the natural energy and character they add to the journey. St Andrews streets are lined with boutique stores, free house pubs, ice cream stores and my personal favourite coffee shops.
St Andrews as a town is surrounded in history and my favorite site has got to be St Andrews Castle, although it is a ruin – it is beautiful and towers into the sky, I could just imagine what it was like in its prime.
St Andrews has a fantastic golf course, if you enjoy a round (like me!) then it is well worth having a round here and let’s not forget Prince Williams favorite bar was within the St Andrews Golf Hotel!
